TUPU operates their mushroom farm in Spandau, on the west side of Berlin. The office is located in Mitte. The workshop for prototyping and other engineering work is at a place called Motion Lab, in Friederichshein.
The company is a startup. I joined the team when there were only 12 employees, and now there are 22. The company includes people from many different countries, including Ireland, Belgium, Poland, Israel, the Netherlands, Australia, Ecuador, the US, and Germany.
The main goal of TUPU is to create autonomous farming solutions for urban mushroom farms, to be able to grow local produce and cut out the cost and pollution caused by shipping mushrooms across the world. I work in the engineering R&D department, creating ideas and coming up with cost effective solutions to problems.
Most of my work is done in CAD, designing growing containers, shelving systems, end-of-arm robotic tooling, and grow lids. Everyone at the company also has a bi-weekly 'farm day,' where we spend a day harvest mushrooms, cleaning, or whatever else needs done around the farm.
I was very surprised by the workplace culture of TUPU versus what I was used to from my previous internships in America. It felt much easier to talk to my superiors. Sick days and vacation time are no sweat, and even as an intern I was given more days off than some people get in a year in the US.
